Welington Marathon Clinic
New Years Message from the President

David President PhotoWelcome to 2015 an exciting year for the Wellington Marathon Clinic.

I am privileged to be given the honour of being the Elected President and look forward to working with my Committee Members; Jillian, David, Meg, Gordy, Sally and Rach and our Website and Communications Team; Stan and Fiona.

Our goals this year are to support Sally and her team with the 30th running of our Wellington Event in June 2015.

We are also focusing on increasing our membership and encouraging more participation in events.

We have our first event to encourage our members on Saturday 24 January 2015 – the 21st year of the Jumbo-Holdsworth, if you have not done this for a while or it is your first time, I encourage you to take part in the 24km Trail Run or the shorter Hooper Loop. Rach, Gordy, Bill Freck. and myself are starters to date. http://jumbo-holdsworth.co.nz/

Our Opening Day for the WMC year will be Sunday 25 January 2015.

For the new members initiative we want our existing clinic members to support and participate and encourage a friend to join us in the Round the Bays Event on Sunday 22 February 2015 in the Half Marathon, Snapper 10km, 6.5km fun run/walk or Buggy Walk http://wellingtonroundthebays.co.nz/

WMC will have a Marquee at Kilbirnie Park providing drinks and a sausage sizzle for our members and potential new members/friends. We will be encouraging people to sign up to WMC with a goal to train and participate in the upcoming Honest 10k Series in March and April http://www.runningcalendar.co.nz/the-honest-10/ and stepping up to the Wellington Half Marathon on 5 July 2015 http://www.harbourcapital.org.nz/

New Members Open Day will be Sunday 1 March, one week after Round the Bays.

I encourage all members to get their colleagues, friends and family to participate in the Round the Bays Event and join us at Kilbirnie Park; then to come along the following week on our New Members Open Day.

I am also keen for clinic members to support our training programme for the new members, please let me know if you are available to assist presidentwmc@gmail.com . Of course we encourage new members to attend at any of our Sunday runs.

Back to business

Our Marathon events for the first half of the year are;

Motatapu off Road Marathon on Saturday 7 March 2015 http://www.motatapu.com/

Rotorua Marathon on Saturday 2 May 2015 http://rotoruamarathon.co.nz/

Wellington Event (30th Anniversary) on 5 July 2015 http://www.harbourcapital.org.nz/

With some clinic members already committed to these events and of course there are alternative distances to participate in for all of these events. Lets get out there and train together and support our participants and encourage others to join us.

If members are participating in other events please let us know at info@wmc.org.nz

As a lasting memory of 2014 it was fantastic to participate in the inaugural Queenstown Marathon. With a great turnout of WMC members participating in both the Marathon and the ½ Marathon event enjoying the wet windy and hilly conditions it was a superb event. A good weekend away with stunning weather (the day after !)

Madame Secretary, Rach, is creating a new WMC Facebook page, which will be a closed group for members only. This is a forum for members to communicate and collaborate on training, events, and weekday training runs. Rach will be giving a talk at the Clinic on how to be an active member on the page, and for those of you who are not into the Facebook social media forum as yet.

With Motatapu as my next Marathon event I am already looking forward to the comforts of the Arrowtown pub for our accommodation and refreshments after the race.

I hope you enjoy the holiday break and wishing a great New Year to all.

David Green
